Long eyelashes can instantly open the eyes, making them look brighter and more defined. They’re the perfect complement to any eyeshadow color or winged eyeliner look, plus they look gorgeous when worn on their own. Maybe your lashes are shorter than you like, and you want to extend them, or maybe you prefer a more natural lash look, versus say, a bold lash look created using volumizing mascaras. In this guide, learn makeup artist inspired application techniques to lock into your long-lash era, plus explore Lancôme’s range of lengthening mascaras so you can confidently choose the right mascara for you.
Do lengthening mascaras work?
Lancôme’s lengthening mascaras can indeed work to make your eyelashes look longer. These mascaras often contain fibers or lengthening polymers that extend the appearance of your lash length. They work by coating each lash from root to tip with a specialized brush, making them look fuller and more extended. For lasting lash length, make sure to condition your lashes using a lash serum regularly and remove mascara with a gentle, yet effective eye makeup remover to prevent fallout from scrubbing.
Step 1: Choose Your Lengthening Mascara
When selecting mascara with the goal of lash length, consider the mascara formula, like a lengthening formula over a volumizing formula, and mascara brush type, like small versus large bristles, to help you build lash length. Lancôme offers a range of mascaras that are excellent at building lash length.
Make 1 Coat of Mascara Look Like 2: Prep with Cils Booster XL
A good lengthening mascara will help to create longer lashes, but you can amp up the length even more when you prep eyelashes with a good lash primer. Cils Booster XL Lash & Mascara Primer Base is infused with Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E plus micro-fibers which cling to each lash, creating an even surface layer so lashes appear longer and fuller using your favorite mascara. The multi-purpose formula not only makes one coat of mascara look like two, but when lashes feel damaged or could use some love, it can also be worn overnight as a lash serum or “lash mask.” Simply apply Cils Booster’s white-to-clear formula on clean lashes before bed to nourish and rejuvenate.

Step 2: Prepare Your Eyelashes
Start with clean, makeup-free eyelashes. Use a gentle eye makeup remover to remove any old makeup. Next, use a lash curler to gently curl your lashes. This will help them appear longer and more lifted. Place the curler at the base of your lashes and hold for about 3-5 seconds. Avoid excessive pressure to prevent damage. Repeat the process up to 3 times, curling lashes upward and outward starting from the base and working toward the ends of lashes.
Step 3: Apply Mascara Using Expert Techniques for Length
Now that you’ve selected your lengthening mascara and prepped your lashes, try these expert-developed application techniques for longer-looking eyelashes:
1. Start at the Base: Place the mascara wand at the base of your lashes and wiggle it gently as you move upwards. This helps to coat the lashes from root to tip, making them appear longer. Once you reach the tips of your lashes, give them a few extra swipes to extend their length.
2. Layer for More Length: Apply a second coat of mascara after the first coat has dried. This can help build length without clumping. If you’re using fiber mascara, apply the second coat immediately after the first to set the fibers in place.
3. Hold the Wand Vertical: While holding the applicator vertically, apply mascara using a vertical motion for extra length and spikey or wispy long lashes, especially on outer-corner lashes.
4. Apply Mascara to the Lower Lashes: Applying mascara to your lower lashes can create a more open and doe-eyed look, making your upper lashes appear longer in comparison.
5. Try Tightlining: Tightlining, or applying eyeliner in between eyelashes, helps make the lash bed look fuller for more defined eyes without a full line of eyeliner.
6. Lock in Your Look with Setting Spray: Use a setting spray to help set the mascara and keep your lash length in place all day. This can also help prevent smudging and flake fallout throughout the day.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Don’t Pump the Wand: Pumping the wand in and out of the tube can introduce air, which can dry out the mascara quicker and cause clumping during future applications.
2. Don’t Over-Apply: Applying too much mascara can lead to clumping and a heavy, unnatural feel. Build up the length gradually with light coats.
3. Don’t Rub Your Eyes: Rubbing your eyes can cause mascara to smudge and deflate. If you need to remove any excess, use a clean spoolie brush or cotton tip with gentle precision.
