Oily Skin

Oily skin is characterized by excess sebum production, leading to excess oil, shine in the T-zone, and potential blemishes on acne-prone skin. Despite challenges like enlarged pores, oily skin has its benefits. This skin type helps maintain skin hydration and is even known to delay fine lines.

Oily skin is primarily influenced by genetics, meaning if your parents had oily skin, there's a higher chance you will too. Beyond genetics, environmental factors can intensify oily skin. Humidity and heat can exacerbate the production of sebum, leading to an oilier complexion. Hormone-related causes, diet, and lifestyle choices may also contribute to excess oil production and an oily complexion.

Moisturizing oily skin, although it may seem counterintuitive, is necessary for proper skin hydration, reducing oiliness, and maintaining the skin barrier. Though oily skin may not be dry, oily skin can experience dehydration. Choose non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and oil-free moisturizers or serums with humectants like hyaluronic acid or beta-glucan, and ingredients like niacinamide to quench dehydration and balance oil without greasiness or a heavy feel on skin.

To care for oily skin, start by building a skincare routine for oily skin with products that target excess oil while keeping the skin balanced. Avoid oil-based cleansers and instead, use a gentle foaming face wash at least twice daily to remove impurities and excess oil without stripping essential moisture. Use an exfoliator or treatment with salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that dissolves sebum and unclogs pores, which can help prevent blemishes. Use an alcohol-free toner to refine pores and balance oil. Don't skip your moisturizer and always wear sunscreen to maintain a visibly youthful, radiant complexion.
